Full Plot & Ending Explained

Intro

Bonny Kane and “Skid” Johnson are vaudeville performers in the 1920s, and their marriage is tested when Skid gets a Broadway break while Bonny is left touring on the road.

Turning Point 1

Skid’s new success pulls him away from the old act and begins widening the gap between the couple, especially because Bonny is stuck in the same routine while he is being pushed toward a bigger career.

Turning Point 2

As Skid’s Broadway life intensifies, his drinking becomes a serious problem, and the press begins reporting that he is spending time with a pretty co-star, which deepens the marital crisis.

Turning Point 3

Bonny cannot stop Skid’s alcohol abuse or pull him back from the collapse that follows success, and the strain turns their relationship into a painful public failure.

Turning Point 4

Bonny eventually divorces Skid and remarries rancher Harvey Howell, leaving Skid to keep spiraling while his old life and marriage break apart.

Turning Point 5

Skid falls so far that he winds up in a drunk ward, while his old friend Bozo Evans tries to help rehabilitate him and restore some stability to his life.

Turning Point 6

Bozo’s efforts seem nearly hopeless until Bonny returns to the act, allowing the professional partnership to be patched up even though the emotional damage has already been severe.

Ending

By the end, Bonny and Skid are no longer reunited as a couple, but they do reconcile enough to work together again professionally, closing on a damaged yet functional resolution rather than a romantic one.
