Full Plot & Ending Explained

Intro

The film opens in Gotham City on Christmas Day, where the wealthy Cobblepots are horrified by their newborn son Oswald’s deformities and abandon him in the sewer, where penguins take him in.

Turning Point 1

Thirty-three years later, industrialist Max Shreck unveils his plan for a power plant, but the Red Triangle Gang attacks the ceremony; Batman intervenes, while the gang kidnaps Shreck and delivers him to Oswald, now the Penguin, who blackmails Shreck with evidence of his crimes.

Turning Point 2

Shreck helps Penguin stage a fake kidnapping of the mayor’s baby so Penguin can “rescue” the child and become a public hero, then asks for access to Gotham’s birth records as Penguin claims he wants to find his parents; meanwhile, Shreck discovers that Penguin is interested in the city’s first-born sons for a darker purpose.

Turning Point 3

Shreck’s timid secretary Selina Kyle discovers the real purpose of the power plant—to drain Gotham’s electricity and feed Shreck’s control scheme—so Shreck tries to kill her by pushing her out of a window; she survives, is revived by cats, and transforms into Catwoman, beginning her own vendetta against Shreck.

Turning Point 4

Bruce Wayne grows suspicious of Penguin and, as Batman, investigates his ties to the Red Triangle Gang, while Selina/Catwoman and Bruce begin a tense romance in their civilian identities; at the same time, Shreck pushes Penguin into a mayoral campaign to remove political opposition to the power plant.

Turning Point 5

Penguin’s gang causes chaos in Gotham to destroy the mayor’s standing, but Batman fights back and repeatedly disrupts Penguin’s plans; later, Catwoman confronts Batman, and the conflict shifts into a three-way struggle among Batman, Penguin, and Catwoman as loyalties and attraction keep changing.

Turning Point 6

Penguin and Catwoman eventually team up with Shreck against Batman, and they kidnap the Ice Princess, the woman chosen to light Gotham’s Christmas tree, in an attempt to frame Batman and bait him into a public disaster.

Ending

At the climax, Batman rescues the kidnapped victim and stops Penguin’s final assault, including the attack involving his penguin army, while Penguin is fatally overwhelmed by the aftermath of his own scheme; Catwoman rejects both Penguin and Shreck, confronts Shreck, and Shreck is killed as well, leaving Batman to part ways with Selina as Gotham is saved.
