Full Plot & Ending Explained

Intro

After burying Dobby, Harry, Ron, and Hermione continue their hunt for Voldemort’s Horcruxes and decide that Gringotts may hold one of them, so they enlist Griphook’s help in breaking into Bellatrix Lestrange’s vault in exchange for the Sword of Gryffindor.

Turning Point 1

At Gringotts, the trio meets the wandmaker Ollivander, who explains that the wands taken from Malfoy Manor belonged to Bellatrix and Draco Malfoy, and Harry realizes Draco’s wand has transferred allegiance to him after Harry disarmed him; inside Bellatrix’s vault they find Hufflepuff’s cup, but Griphook betrays them by taking the sword and abandoning them as the vault security traps them.

Turning Point 2

The trio escapes the collapsing vault by releasing the dragon guardian and fleeing on its back, after which Harry sees a vision of Voldemort at Gringotts discovering the theft and realizes another Horcrux tied to Ravenclaw is hidden at Hogwarts.

Turning Point 3

In Hogsmeade, the trio is rescued by Aberforth Dumbledore, who reveals he sent Dobby to Malfoy Manor and shows them a secret passage into Hogwarts; Neville Longbottom brings them back into the castle, where Harry publicly returns, Snape is driven off by Professor McGonagall, and the students begin preparing for battle.

Turning Point 4

As Hogwarts braces for war, Luna Lovegood urges Harry to speak with Helena Ravenclaw’s ghost, who reveals that Voldemort used dark magic on Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem and hid it in the Room of Requirement; meanwhile Ron and Hermione enter the Chamber of Secrets and destroy Hufflepuff’s cup with a basilisk fang, while Draco, Blaise, and Goyle attack Harry until Ron and Hermione arrive to help.

Turning Point 5

Harry and his friends race through the castle as Voldemort’s forces attack, and when Voldemort murders Snape to try to claim mastery of the Elder Wand, Harry takes Snape’s memories and learns the truth about Snape’s lifelong protection of him and the sacrificial plan that must follow.

Turning Point 6

Harry enters the Forbidden Forest and allows Voldemort to strike him with the Killing Curse, but the attempt does not destroy him; after this apparent death, the defenders of Hogwarts believe Harry is gone and the battle continues as the truth slowly emerges.

Ending

Back at Hogwarts, Neville kills Nagini, destroying the last Horcrux, and Harry returns alive to confront Voldemort; because Voldemort used the Elder Wand without truly mastering it, Harry’s Expelliarmus defeats him, Voldemort disintegrates, and the wizarding world is freed from his rule.
