Full Plot & Ending Explained

Intro

Princess Merida of DunBroch grows up in the Scottish Highlands as the headstrong daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor, preferring archery and freedom over the courtly life her mother expects of her. As a child, she receives a bow from Fergus, follows mysterious will-o’-the-wisps into the woods, and witnesses the family’s first terrifying encounter with the bear Mor’du, which leaves Fergus maimed and deepens Elinor’s fear of danger.

Turning Point 1

Years later, Merida learns that Elinor has arranged for her to marry one of three rival clan heirs—Young MacGuffin, Young Macintosh, or Young Dingwall—to preserve peace between the clans. Refusing to accept the marriage, Merida challenges the tradition by announcing that she, as DunBroch’s firstborn, will compete for her own hand in the archery contest, then humiliates the suitors by winning decisively.

Turning Point 2

Elinor is furious at Merida’s defiance, and their argument escalates when Merida slashes the family tapestry with a sword after their clash over duty versus independence. In a rage, Elinor burns Merida’s bow, Merida storms into the forest on Angus, and the wisps lead her to an old witch’s hut, where she asks for a spell to change her mother’s mind and receives an enchanted cake.

Turning Point 3

After Elinor eats the cake, she is transformed into a bear, unable to speak but still herself inside, and Merida realizes the spell will become permanent if it is not broken by the second sunrise. Mother and daughter flee together from the castle after the clan mistakes the bear for Mor’du, and Merida tries to undo the curse while keeping Elinor hidden from Fergus and the men searching the woods.

Turning Point 4

Merida returns to the witch’s hut and finds only clues that the curse can be reversed by “mending the bond torn by pride,” so she and Elinor begin repairing the damaged tapestry. Their journey through the wilderness forces them to cooperate, and Merida slowly understands her mother’s strictness as love and fear rather than cruelty, while Elinor learns to trust Merida’s courage and judgment.

Turning Point 5

When the bond is finally repaired, the curse does not break, and Merida realizes she must reconcile with Elinor before the second sunrise or lose her forever. At the ancient stones, they reach the witch’s cauldron just as Mor’du attacks; the bear is revealed to be the cursed prince from the old legend Elinor once told, and after a violent fight Merida uses her archery skills and the restored family bond to help defeat him.

Ending

Merida and Elinor reach true understanding at the final moment, and the spell is lifted, restoring Elinor to human form before the curse becomes permanent. DunBroch survives, Merida is no longer forced into marriage, and the film ends with mother and daughter reconciled as Merida embraces a future of her own choosing while honoring her family.
