Full Plot & Ending Explained

Intro

The Rental follows Charlie, his wife Michelle, Charlie’s brother Josh, and Josh’s girlfriend Mina as they arrive at a remote Oregon Coast rental house for a weekend trip that quickly turns uneasy because of the creepy caretaker Taylor and the group’s own hidden tensions.

Turning Point 1

Mina’s earlier application for the house had been rejected, so Charlie books it instead; when Taylor arrives, Mina confronts him about possible racial discrimination, and later the group notices that Taylor has brought a telescope, which makes Mina feel watched and uneasy.

Turning Point 2

That first night, Michelle gives everyone MDMA except herself, and after Josh passes out, Charlie and Mina kiss in the hot tub and then have sex in the shower, creating the central secret that drives the rest of the film.

Turning Point 3

The next morning, Mina finds a hidden camera in the shower and tells Charlie; he stops her from calling the police because Michelle and Josh would learn about the affair, so they decide to keep quiet and stay at the house.

Turning Point 4

That night, Josh realizes his dog is missing, Michelle takes ecstasy, and Taylor returns to fix the hot tub; Mina confronts Taylor about the camera, Josh mistakes Taylor’s presence for an attack, and he beats Taylor unconscious.

Turning Point 5

While the group is outside arguing about what to do, a masked intruder sneaks in and suffocates Taylor to death, leaving the others to assume Josh’s beating killed him and forcing them into panic and cover-up mode.

Turning Point 6

Back inside, Mina and Josh search for the camera’s transmitter to destroy the footage, but Josh receives a video from Charlie’s phone showing Charlie and Mina having sex, which confirms the betrayal and shatters the group’s trust.

Ending

Charlie and Michelle leave in separate emotional collapse after the affair is exposed; the masked killer targets them one by one, and in the end all four guests die, with Mina also being chased into the woods and killed, while the murderer’s identity remains unrevealed.
