Full Plot & Ending Explained
Intro
Kate Sanders, a scholarship student from Virginia, arrives at a prestigious Paris ballet academy, where she immediately feels out of place among wealthier, more polished dancers and learns that the students are competing for a coveted contract with the Opéra national de Paris.
Turning Point 1
On her first day, Kate makes an insensitive comment about Marine Durand’s deceased twin brother Ollie, who died by suicide; Marine attacks her, and the academy’s severe headmistress, Madame Brunelle, humiliates Marine for the resulting disorder. That night, Kate discovers she has been assigned to share a room with Marine, forcing the two rivals into close contact.
Turning Point 2
Marine takes Kate to The Jungle, a drug-filled botanical nightclub, where the two begin to bond through dancing, drugs, and dares. Marine challenges Kate to a dance contest in which the first to stop must quit the academy, but Kate refuses to let Marine lose alone and suggests they stop at the same time, earning Marine’s respect and beginning their friendship.
Turning Point 3
As they grow closer, Kate and Marine confide in each other: Kate reveals her working-class background and scholarship status, while Marine admits she is the daughter of the U.S. Ambassador to France. During an embassy event, Kate learns that her scholarship is secretly funded by Marine’s family, and Marine’s mother threatens to revoke it because she sees Kate as competition; Marine defends Kate, and the two become sexually involved.
Turning Point 4
The relationship between Kate and Marine deepens into intimacy and emotional dependence while the academy’s competition intensifies, especially around the school's prize contract and the pairing with Felipe, the school’s most admired male dancer. Kate increasingly pushes herself through pain and pressure, while Marine becomes more restless and rebellious, both women struggling with jealousy, ambition, and the demands placed on them by their families and the academy.
Turning Point 5
The situation collapses when Kate’s scholarship is revoked, leaving her desperate and furious; Marine’s privileged family has effectively cut off Kate’s path forward, and the bond between the two women fractures under betrayal and competition. Kate, now fighting for her future and to support her family, turns ruthless and climbs over the others in the final push for the top position.
Ending
In the final stretch, Kate wins the academy’s ultimate prize and secures the contract she has been fighting for, while Marine is left to face the damage caused by privilege, grief, and their broken relationship; the film closes on the bitter cost of their obsession, with Kate’s triumph coming at the price of innocence, friendship, and emotional stability.
