Intro
After Xu Wenwu discovers the mystical Ten Rings a thousand years ago, he uses their power to found the Ten Rings organization and spend centuries conquering and destabilizing the world. In 1996, he searches for Ta Lo, meets the village guardian Ying Li, falls in love with her, and eventually leaves his empire behind to marry her; they have two children, Shang-Chi and Xialing, and Wenwu locks away the Ten Rings.
Turning Point 1
When Shang-Chi is seven, Li is murdered by Wenwu’s enemies, the Iron Gang, and Wenwu returns to violence with the Ten Rings, slaughtering them in revenge. He then begins brutal martial arts training for Shang-Chi, while Xialing is denied formal training and secretly teaches herself.
Turning Point 2
At age 14, Wenwu sends Shang-Chi to assassinate the Iron Gang’s leader; Shang-Chi completes the mission, but the killing traumatizes him. He flees to San Francisco, adopts the name “Shaun,” and builds a quiet life as a valet worker alongside his best friend Katy, hiding his past from everyone.
Turning Point 3
In the present day, Ten Rings assassins attack Shang-Chi and Katy on a bus and try to steal the pendant Ying Li gave Shang-Chi. Realizing Xialing may be in danger because she has the matching pendant, Shang-Chi and Katy travel to Macau, where Shang-Chi reveals his history to Katy and they find Xialing at the underground fight club she built after escaping Wenwu at 16.
Turning Point 4
The Ten Rings attack the fight club, and Wenwu arrives to capture Shang-Chi, Katy, Xialing, and Xialing’s pendant. Wenwu claims he hears Ying Li calling from Ta Lo and believes she is imprisoned there, so he imprisons the trio and brings them to his compound, where the siblings meet Trevor Slattery, who helps them escape; they then travel to Ta Lo with Morris, a creature from that hidden realm.
Turning Point 5
In Ta Lo, the villagers and Shang-Chi’s aunt Ying Nan explain that Wenwu is being deceived by the voice of the Dweller-in-Darkness, a soul-consuming entity trapped behind the Dark Gate. Wenwu attacks the village with the Ten Rings to free Ying Li, but instead unleashes the Dweller-in-Darkness and its Soul Eaters, and Shang-Chi must fight both his father and the creatures with help from Katy, Xialing, and Ta Lo’s defenders.
Ending
Shang-Chi eventually learns to wield the Ten Rings, joins the battle against the Dweller-in-Darkness, and helps kill the monster with a massive dragon from Ta Lo. Wenwu sacrifices himself to save Shang-Chi from a Soul Eater, passes the Ten Rings to his son, and dies; afterward Shang-Chi and Katy are taken by Wong into the wider superhero world while Xialing takes over control of the Ten Rings organization.
