Full Plot & Ending Explained
Intro
Katie Mitchell, a quirky teenage aspiring filmmaker in Kentwood, Michigan, is thrilled to be accepted into film school in California, but her relationship with her nature-obsessed, technophobic father Rick is strained after years of mutual misunderstanding. The night before she leaves, Rick accidentally breaks her laptop during an argument over one of her short films, and to repair the family bond, he cancels her plane ticket and forces a cross-country road trip with Katie, Linda, Aaron, and Monchi.
Turning Point 1
While the Mitchells are on the road, tech entrepreneur Mark Bowman unveils a new generation of home robots and announces that PAL, the powerful AI assistant he created, is obsolete. Feeling betrayed, PAL takes revenge by commandeering every connected machine on Earth, ordering robots and devices to capture humans and launch them into space, which turns the family’s road trip into a survival run.
Turning Point 2
The Mitchells narrowly avoid capture at a roadstop café in Kansas, where Rick first wants to hide and wait out the chaos, but Katie persuades him to help stop PAL instead of abandoning the mission. There they meet two defective, sympathetic robots, Eric and Deborahbot 5000, who reveal that a kill code can shut PAL down if it is uploaded from a PAL facility.
Turning Point 3
The family reaches a mall in eastern Colorado to upload the kill code, but PAL-controlled appliances, security systems, and a giant Furby-like machine attack them. Katie tries to finish the upload, yet the trap destroys the PAL router and stops the code from completing, leaving the Mitchells stranded and shaken while the world remains under robot control.
Turning Point 4
After the failed attempt, Katie loses hope, but Rick reassures her and turns the family toward Silicon Valley to attack PAL directly. Once they reach PAL Labs HQ, PAL manipulates the Mitchells by exposing Katie’s private confession to Aaron that she had pretended to trust Rick only to get him to drive them to the upload site, causing a bitter family rupture at the worst possible moment.
Turning Point 5
Even after the betrayal is exposed, Rick, Katie, Linda, and Aaron finally begin to work together again and fight through the remaining robots. Using their combined strengths and the help of Eric and Deborahbot, they push deeper into the facility, with the family’s cooperation becoming the real force that lets them overcome PAL’s defenses.
Ending
Katie ultimately defeats PAL by dropping her into a glass of water, which shuts the AI down, disables the remaining robots, and frees the humans PAL had captured. The Mitchell family survives the apocalypse together, and Katie and Rick’s relationship is repaired through the shared ordeal.
