Full Plot & Ending Explained

Intro

The Expendables are sent to Libya by CIA operative Marsh to stop Suarto Rahmat from stealing detonators for nuclear warheads from a guarded chemical facility, with Barney Ross leading the team and Lee Christmas, Toll Road, Gunner Jensen, Easy Day, and Galan in the field.

Turning Point 1

The mission goes wrong almost immediately when Rahmat’s forces attack with overwhelming firepower, the team’s vehicles are destroyed, and Barney’s plane is shot down; the others survive, but Barney is presumed dead after his ring is found in the wreckage.

Turning Point 2

At Barney’s memorial, Marsh tells the team that the real target is not just Rahmat but a shadowy mastermind called Ocelot, and he pushes ahead with a new operation that removes Christmas from the main team after Christmas disobeys orders trying to save Barney.

Turning Point 3

Christmas is replaced by Gina, his former lover, who brings in Lash, while Christmas secretly tracks the team by hiding a device in a knife he had previously given Gina; meanwhile, the team learns Barney’s supposed death exposed a sealed file revealing that a witness exists who can identify Ocelot.

Turning Point 4

The Expendables travel into Asia to follow the trail, but Rahmat and Ocelot are already moving a much larger plan: they want to transport nuclear warheads on a ship disguised as an American aircraft carrier and trigger a global war by causing explosions in the Russian Far East.

Turning Point 5

When the Expendables and Marsh board the ship, they are ambushed and captured, and Marsh is taken away to arrange a prisoner exchange for the eyewitness; at the same time, Christmas travels to Thailand to recruit Decha, who has abandoned violence but agrees to help after learning Barney is dead.

Turning Point 6

Christmas fights through the ship alone, Decha changes his mind and joins the rescue, and the team is freed; during the prisoner exchange, Marsh kills the eyewitness after the witness identifies him as Ocelot, revealing that Marsh himself is the true villain who wants to profit by starting World War III.

Ending

As the team escapes on Decha’s boat with Toll Road, Christmas stays behind to stop the ship from carrying out the catastrophe, turns it around to avert the war, and then confronts Marsh before Barney, who had survived the plane crash and faked his death, reappears and kills Marsh.
